Hospice and Palliative Care
There may be no form of care more sensitive and personal than hospice care. Helping patients, their families and friends deal with the medical and personal challenges surrounding the end of life is a comforting and worthwhile undertaking that the team at Mount Carmel Hospice embraces.
Mount Carmel Hospice is one of the many programs supported by the Mount Carmel Foundation. As the only faith-based hospice program in central Ohio, Mount Carmel Hospice lives by its mission to provide loving, compassionate care to all hospice patients, regardless of their ability to pay. Donations to the Foundation ensure this mission is kept alive by providing:
- Expert end-of-life care and emotional and spiritual support
- Care, medications and supplies for low-income patients
- Bereavement counseling for grieving individuals and families
- The family focused Evergreen Program provides support groups for grieving school-aged children and adults. After a pizza supper, children attend an age appropriate group and adults attend their own group
- Soothing massage therapy for both inpatient and in-home hospice patients
- Educational materials for families and members of the central Ohio community
Last year alone, Mount Carmel Hospice was able to serve more than 1,200 patients, aid 3,000 family members and provide bereavement services to over 4,000 family members and friends. Your generous gift to Mount Carmel Hospice will touch thousands more lives and provide comfort and relief at a crucial time. Palliative care provides pain and symptom management for patients with advanced illness. But at Mount Carmel it is so much more.
When faced with a serious, chronic disease, or Life limiting illness patients and their families receive counsel on all aspects of their disease, including the physical, emotional, spiritual and social aspects.
Mount Carmel’s Palliative Care program was one of the first of its kind and is considered one of the largest and best in the country. Many palliative care programs serve around 200 patients annually. In 2012, more than 2300 patients received palliative care at Mount Carmel East, West and St. Ann’s. Sustaining and growing that program depends on generous philanthropic support, like that provided through donations to the Mount Carmel Foundation.
On the small scale, Foundation donations earmarked for Palliative Care help provide educational materials for staff and family members, massage therapy for patients and their families and comfort items for palliative care patient rooms and waiting areas at Mount Carmel hospitals. On a larger scale, they’re used to help train other institutions on how to implement palliative care. This training has distinguished Mount Carmel Palliative Care as one of six designated Palliative Care Leadership Centers through CAPC (Center to Advance Palliative Care) in the United States.
If you would like to offer support to the Palliative Care program as it continues this valuable work, please consider making a secure online gift to the Mount Carmel Foundation today and earmarking it for Palliative Care.
