Palliative care provides pain and symptom management for patients with advanced illness. But at Mount Carmel it is so much more.

When faced with a serious, chronic illness, patients and their families receive counsel on all aspects of their disease, including the physical, emotional, spiritual and social aspects.

Mount Carmel’s Palliative Care program was one of the first of its kind and is considered one of the largest and best in the country. Most palliative care programs serve around 200 patients annually. In 2008, more than 1,900 patients received palliative care at Mount Carmel East, West and St. Ann’s. Sustaining and growing that program depends on generous philanthropic support, like that provided through donations to the Mount Carmel Foundation.

On the small scale, Foundation donations earmarked for Palliative Care help provide educational materials for staff and family members, massage therapy for patients and their families and comfort items for palliative care patient rooms and waiting areas at Mount Carmel hospitals. On a larger scale, they’re used to help train other institutions on how to implement palliative care. This training has distinguished Mount Carmel Palliative Care as one of six designated Palliative Care Leadership Centers in the United States.

If you would like to offer support to the Palliative Care program as it continues this valuable work, please consider making a secure online gift to the Mount Carmel Foundation today and earmarking it for Palliative Care.
